Choosing a Roof Underlayment: 3 Simple Tips

The underlayment refers to the thin, water-resistant material installed between the asphalt shingles and the decking. By acting as an effective barrier against water or moisture infiltration, the underlayment helps keep your roof system dry and leak-free. So, if you plan on getting a new roof this season, make sure to choose a good underlayment for it. Here are a few tips:

Roof Underlayment

1. Consider asphalt-saturated underlayment. This is the traditional option for underlayment and is, in fact, the only choice available before synthetic underlayment became a thing. It’s made of felt, which is similar to tar paper, but instead of tar, an asphalt layer is used as the water-resistant component. While asphalt-saturated underlayment has been eclipsed by newer and more flexible options, it remains a viable option for many homeowners looking to protect their new roof system against water, moisture and impact damage. The fact that it’s the most cost-effective underlayment available also doesn’t hurt.

Should you choose this option? If you’re on a budget, then an asphalt-saturated underlayment is fine. But don’t count out its higher quality counterparts just yet. They may be costlier, but they can also provide even better protection for your new roof.

2. Pick a synthetic roof underlayment. This is considered a direct upgrade to asphalt-saturated underlayment. Synthetic is tougher, more flexible and more water-resistant. It’s also costlier, but their improved performance can make up for it. This particular option is made from woven polyethylene or polypropylene, which allows for greater durability and tear resistance compared to asphalt.

Should you choose this option? You should go for synthetic underlayment if you’re getting a new metal roof. That’s because synthetic offers excellent heat resistance, which can add to the reflective properties of metal roofing. In terms of price, it sits comfortably between the more affordable asphalt saturated and the more premium rubberized asphalt. So, if you want something better and tougher than the former, but not as expensive as the latter, then synthetic underlayment is a good idea.

3. Go for rubberized asphalt. This is considered the most premium option for roof underlayment. Rubberized asphalt, as its name implies, is made primarily of rubber polymers and asphalt, but the composition may vary with each roofing manufacturer. It’s incredibly durable and waterproof, and is impervious to movement caused by thermal expansion. Basically, rubberized asphalt blows asphalt-saturated and synthetic out of the water in terms of stability and performance, although its high price may turn off some.

Should you choose this option? If budget is not an issue, then you should definitely go for it. Rubberized asphalt is also the best pick in areas that see extreme changes in weather and temperature throughout the year.
