  • Light vs. Dark: Does the Color of Your Shingles Matter?

When it comes to selecting the color of your roof’s shingles, most homeowners just pick their favorite color without realizing that the color of your roof actually plays a big part in its overall efficiency. Choosing whether to get light- or dark-colored shingles is one of the more important decisions you’ll have to make when it comes to a roof installation.

Light vs. Dark: Does the Color of Your Shingles Matter?

Why It Matters

The color of your roof affects the internal temperature of your home. Most people understand that light colors reflect heat while dark colors absorb or retain it. This is why we wear light-colored shirts during hot summer days. The same principle applies to your roofing system.

If you live in a climate with hot days year-round like Texas, Arizona or New Mexico, you should talk to your roofer about installing light-colored asphalt shingles to better reflect the heat away from your home and keep cooling bills low. However, if you live in a state with a colder climate where heat from the sun is at a premium, especially during winter, then it would be better if you select a color that is dark to be able to retain the sun’s heat.

When choosing a roof color, you should also consider the rest of your neighborhood. Many neighborhoods will only allow certain colors or will require special permission for some colors. Some will even go as far as to require only a specific type of roofing, such as reflective shingles. Before making this decision, be sure to talk to a local roofing company that knows the area to be sure that you are not breaking any neighborhood or homeowners’ association rules.
