Modified bitumen roofing is a type of built-up roofing (BUR) system, which is built with multiple layers of material. In the case of modified bitumen, alternating layers of reinforcing polyester or fiberglass fabric and adhesive are installed over a specially-prepared substrate. Unlike traditional BUR that features a top layer of gravel, modified bitumen roofing is protected by a cap sheet made of sheet bitumen or asphalt. Its layers can be installed using heat or torch (atactic polypropylene or APP) or “cold” adhesive (styrene butadiene styrene or SBS).
