What Makes Up A GAF Lifetime Roofing System?

As a GAF Master Elite® roofing contractor, American Roofing & Construction, LLC offers GAF’s entire selection of roofing products, including the GAF Lifetime Roofing System. In today’s blog, we share an overview of how a GAF Lifetime Roofing System is put together.

Roof Structure

The GAF Lifetime Roofing System needs a support structure in sound condition. During initial consultations, our installers inspect the existing roof and determine how much work will need to be done to the roofing structure. Typically, the old roof gets stripped down to the decking material, which stays or goes depending on its condition.

Leak Barriers and Roof Deck Protection

GAF manufactures specially designed products for every step of the roof replacement process. First comes GAF WeatherWatch®, an adhesive-backed leak barrier that protects breaks in the roofing plane. GAF’s special underlayment or felts, Shingle-Mate® or VersaShield®, will then be installed.

Starter Strips

The roof edge is especially vulnerable to damage caused by high winds and updrafts as well as infiltration by rainwater. This is why this part of the roof needs to be reinforced. Instead of standard shingles, we install a starter strip, a long roll of material that is adhered to the roof edge using adhesives. Drip edge flashing, which prevents water infiltration at the edges, will also be installed at this point. Starter strips are manufactured to match the chosen asphalt shingle style and color.

Lifetime Shingles

The roof’s main body of asphalt shingles follow the starter strip. The GAF Lifetime Roofing System consists of materials that require precise installation, which is why only GAF certified installers are qualified to install it.

Attic Ventilation

Proper attic ventilation helps prevent damage to the roofing system caused by heat and moisture, such as damage to the insulation and roof support structure. The GAF Lifetime Roofing System features the Cobra® Attic Ventilation. These attic ventilation strips designed to vent warm and humid air from the attic without giving dirt, debris and small animals access to the attic. The correspondingly sized soffit vents help create continuous cooling airflow in the attic.

Ridge Caps

Traditionally, roofers use cut-up asphalt shingles as ridge caps. The GAF Lifetime Roofing System features ridge caps that fit over the attic ventilation strips, but doesn’t get in its way.
